Where does Silicone Rubber come from?

Silicone is found exclusively in the form of silicon dioxide and silicates in nature. Silica is the second most common element in the Earth's solid crust, accounting for 25.8% of its weight, and the most important component of all inorganic materials. It was relatively recent for silicon to be isolated since the element is very rare in nature. Siliceous construction and engineering materials, such as sand, clay, and ceramics, have been around for a very long time.


Silicones are synthetic materials derived from quartz sand, a raw material that is virtually limitless in supply. The chemical structure of these compounds and the many methods of modifying them is responsible for their versatile performance.

A polymer's viscosity is often used to classify the polymer, in addition to its structure. This can result in the distinction between liquid and solid silicone rubber.

For example, Silicone rubber can be designed to have different properties like, high temperature resistance, high tear resistance or fire resistance (to different standard like Fire retardant to EN45545-2 grades).

When mixed and coloured, silicone rubber can be extruded into strips, solid cords, or custom profiles as same as be moulded by compression and injection moulding according to the specifications of the manufacturer.


Properties and Applications

Shore A Hardness of this material ranges from 25 to 90, giving it a wide range of uses. Changing the organic groups attached to the silicone further broadens the scope of possible variations. These variables account for the impressive diversity of silicone products: greases, release agents, antifoam agents, paint additives, paper coatings, high- or room-temperature-vulcanizing silicone rubber grades, and many more. However Silicone Rubber is not resistant to concentrated acids and alkali, some solvents and oils, sodium hydroxide and steam.


Silicones exhibit remarkable resistance to thermal and thermooxidative stress. In addition, they are less sensitive to electromagnetic or particle radiation (UV, alpha, beta, and gamma radiation) than organic plastics.
